The Military Writer's Society of America 2013 Silver Medal for Biography

My True Course is a "greatest generation" historical narrative told from the kitchen table and unedited letters to and from home. Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk charted his course from his hometown of Northumberland to the role of lead navigator of the 97th Heavy Bomb Group for 58 missions in B-17s and in B-29s for the 509th Composite Group during World War II.
Van Kirk navigated the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay on Special Mission No. 13, the first atomic strike on Hiroshima. Dutch was the last surviving crewman of the Enola Gay until his death on July 28, 2014.

Wow what a book all 578 pages. The book is heavily annotated with end notes and a good index.

The first part of the book early life and army training is long and tedious. What made it tolerable was I went to college in the same area that Dutch is from and the place names and store names were familiar. This part of the book is mostly based on letters between Dutch and his family. Once he gets into combat in Europe the pace picks up and there are interesting bits of history that you don't normally hear about.

The section on the atomic bombing is incredibly interesting and informative.

After the war he retired as a major and went to Bucknell University as a chemical engineering major where he got a master's degree. He didn't mention many faculty names; I attended Bucknell in the late 1960's so was hoping for more faculty names to see if any were familiar. He also talked a little about his career at DuPont.

In summary a long book but worth reading for the insights into WWII history and life on the home front.

This is one of the best first person accounts of the bombing of Hiroshima that I have read. A must read for all 509th fans
This book is a treasure that must be a Social Studies textbook at schools! It is a touchy personal story being told in letters and interviews, over the perspective of historic events that changed the world history. Very informative and inspiring alike. Major Van Kirk lives in GA, and we were had the honor to meet him in person and get the book signed.
I feel lucky to have this
I rated this book at a five-star level not so much as a measure of the writing, though that is competently presented, but more for the tremendous amount of priceless information that is presented about the world's first atomic bombing on Hiroshima, and the key men that made the delivery. There is a world of information here--not just facts and figures, as plentiful as those are, but even more importantly Van Kirk's own fascinating vignettes and comments that are sprinkled throughout the entire text. What a treasure! I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in having purchased this book--if you want to really get an inside feel for the men who were tasked with this unprecedented mission, this book will deliver. There is much here that not only surprises, but will also delight. Ted Van Kirk, a freshly minted navigator from Pennsylvania, first meets "the colonel,"Paul Tibbets, in 1942 when then Captain Tibbets is aircraft commander of their B-17, the "Red Gremlin." At the same time he meets bombardier, Tom Ferebee, shortly off his North Carolina family farm. After sorting out their Pennsylvania and Southern Accents (Tom "He must be speaking Dutch." Ted "Talks like he has a mouthful of grits."), Paul, "Dutch", and Tom become part of the "Twelve O'Clock High" B-17 group that began the war. The three fly together for many months during the early and hazardous days of the heavy bomber war over Occupied Europe. Later, in the fall of 1944, with bonds formed in war that eventually lead to life long friendships, the three are reunited at Wendover Air Base, Utah, where they jointly pull together the secret 509th Composite Group, the world's first atomic bomb air group. The book's crucial payoff gives us the full detailed account of the flight of the Enola Gay on August 6th, 1945. Dutch and his co-author Susan Dietz tell us the whole story of how arguably the world's most famous air crew came together and changed history. You will come away from this read feeling as if you had been sitting down with Dutch at his kitchen table, drinking coffee as if he had been telling the story only to you.
A very detailed account of the bombing of Hiroshima,in August of 1945. I was only 1 month old when this bombing too place! I highly recommend this book, especially for affacido's on WWII,in particular the 'Pacific Theatre' A +++++
Exceeds expectations! The historiograpy is very compelling and the reader is exceptionally pleased with the historical accuracy of the document.
It was a gift & he loved it!
